Daily Cal: UC Regents Approve Pay Increase For University Executives

Sac Bee had this on it: Top UC Coaches Earn Twice As Much Money As Top UC Brain Surgeons

Also the UC meeting docs posted on it: here starting at the bottom of page 1 compensation committee actions
And here's: the list of links to approved actions from the July 2014 UC Regents meeting

View: video of the UC Regents Compensation Committee Chair Keiffer and how he characterized the compensation actions at the 01:14:00 mark here
Goes something like this:
I want to cover some important facts about the senior management group salary adjustments. These are the direct reports to the president and equivalents. They have not had an increase for a number of years, in fact its seven years that there has been a system-wide salary increase for these folks and during the same seven year period wages in the marketplace grew on an average of 18.7%. We saw our chancellor pay drop to the bottom third relative to our competitor institutions in the Association of American Universities over this time so it is high time that we made some minimal effort in this area. My own view is that this is certainly not enough but it is an appropriate adjustment under the circumstances. The recommendations here are consistent with the 3% program rolled out for non represented staff and amount to an expenditure slightly under $312,000 for the total of 21 individuals on the list.

Then, after Keiffer comments, Regent Reiss discusses current circumstances where, due to recent hirings, there now exists serious pay inequities that higher seniority chancellors are experiencing and she makes a veiled mention of something Napolitano is working on to fix that issue.

They then vote to approve the 21 compensation increases.

UC Regents then voted approval to pay the Agriculture and Natural Resources new VP $297,052, base plus extras.

and to pay the UC Regent Secretary $250,000 annual base salary, plus extras.

--Several of the 21 employees have not been at UCOP for even close to seven years yet. Many of them are new or relatively recent hires after 2007.
__
If you go to Sac Bee you can also look at bar graph chart format to see if Regent Keiffer's comments capture things fully...(Note the green bar in the Sac Bee charts for bonuses, stipends, etc.
Also, new hires first year compensation might list higher than base pay due to moving allowances, other incentives in hiring packages etc.)

Nicholas Dirks he started in mid summer last June, remember, so his pay in 2013 listed as $248,000.

and comp committee sheet lists $486,800 base annual salary, which becomes $501,404 with the 3% merit increase.

Also see: LA Times: Regents Name New UC San Francisco Leader, Approve Chancellor Pay Raises -includes: On top of that, chancellors receive housing or housing allowances. Medical center leaders are eligible for bonuses based on financial performance and health statistics at hospitals.

UC system President Janet Napolitano described the raises as "minimal" and fair, given the long stretch of frozen salaries and the higher compensation that she said other top-ranked research universities offer.

Gov. Jerry Brown, who is a regent, did not attend Thursday's meeting. In the past he has criticized pay raises for UC and Cal State executives. His office said the governor was not available to comment about the regents' action.

--The Lt. Governor Newsom and Assembly Speaker Atkins also are ex officio UC regents and it did not appear, via video vantage point, that they attended the open sessions of the UC Regents meeting or the compensation committee meetings.
CA Ed Sec Torlakson did attend the compensation portion of the meeting on Thursday- where he briefly made comments solely regarding Title IX.
__
Toward the closing of the UC Regents meeting on Thursday- see 02:25:00- UC Regent Chair Varner made several comments about a WSJ article he and his wife recently read and noted that UC Pres Napolitano was in it- and that it featured many beltway and biz 'very prominent ladies of the United States- ladies who wear a certain kind of jacket' - he was referring to: this WSJ article which describes the $900+ jackets in full detail there.
