November 20 UC Regents Meeting - Not necessary?!

Looks like the UC Regents flew through / rubberstamped their agenda items so fast that time set aside for tomorrow's meeting is no longer necessary. The Chair announced just prior to  today's  lunch time that they would be moving up some agenda items and then they also held an abbreviated previously unannounced unscheduled "evening session" today and adjourned...

Wachter and Varner teleconferenced in their votes on the UC Med agenda item then their teleconference participation  in the meeting ended shortly thereafter

(You also might recall several UC Regents were seriously displeased with the Thur Fri scheduling being put in place purportedly b/c UCOP staff feel exhausted during UC Regents Meeting prep and they want to go straight into weekend mode afterward- that's according to their Prez earlier remaks when announcing and explaining the rationale to Regents like Pattiz and Makarecian when they expressed their problems with a Thurs Fri quorum. In light of that earlier history it is not surprising they are now engaging in Thursday rush job hijinks so they don't have to meet on Friday.)

So, anyway

Some of the UC Regents quotes from discussion of the UC Med governance moves in agenda items today resulted in talking points that were bizarre, dismaying...
to paraphrase some of them:

'We can have conflict of interest so long as disclosure' as our Governance

'Too many hypotheticals to think about so Just vote yes'

'There are false beliefs that extra (all UC Regents) pairs of eyes somehow is better than a small group looking at policy, more eyes does not create better results'

While Other Regents also said

'More eyes on policy changes resulted in improved amendment

Glad this received the advice of other Regents expertise before going forward

Some Regents noted the terms for these committee member positions have not been clearly delineated and responses back to them gave vague promise that they eventually would delineate the length of their terms

Could go on and on

But you can watch video of all the meeting sessions from yesterday and today here:

And, UCLA Fac Blog has some synopsis  with audio only:

And UCOP put out a press release:

"Regents streamline UC Health oversight"

_______________

Other inital/lingering/whatever thoughts:

The mention of student observers as a level of representation of student governance, input  came across as wholly inadequate

The Gov was in the room indirectly: as a self-contradiction over and over
 through his various appointed regents:

Regent Elliott and Ortiz voiced serious concerns on compensation committee powers becoming diminished with this new arrangement and asked why and if it was necessary, in multiple ways

While his other recently reappointed UC Regents like Blum, Lozano and Lansing seemed so eager to 'get 'er done'

Geffen's Sherman didn't say much during discussion in open session-- but Lansing and he will be chair and vice chair in that smaller UC Med committee

At the previous UC Regents Meeting in July  and Sept there was mention that the move to more UC Med autonomy is needed  b/c  one UC Med is falling into the RED  , but they did not specify/name which UC Med it is....
____
Flashback...Wherever Lenz is: it would be helpful to know his thoughts on how the UCSD Jacobs med building projects fell apart, Regent M and new UCSD leadership discussed  the problems during buildings and grounds committee

During Wed meeting Brostrom announced that UC Path would be processing payroll for UCOP at the end of this month, he seemed to want congratulations as though it is a fait accompli- but he did not give an update on the $ amount for project cost overruns on it. Flashback again, it would be interesting to hear Taylor (he sometimes still sits in on UC Regents investments committee meetings) on the current state of UC PATH and his thoughts on how it launched -that would be very interesting to learn, too

Overall, just ...what a weird process the UC Regents meetings have devolved into

But the UC Regents are likely having cocktails and getting their grub on at their reception right now...

Cozy.
