"University of California OKs $8.5 Million For Two Patients Suing Over Financial Conflicts"

(More like $20 million added up on just this one alone, if you include the related WB case

Includes mention of UC and USC faculty shuffling again recall some UC Regents have ties to both)

In depth article Includes:

"Lawyers for the UC regents said in court filings that both Lew and Weiss signed consent forms explaining their surgeries and the risks involved. The UCLA Health system also said in a statement that it “takes seriously its duty to manage relationships with industry in a responsible manner.”

The two settlements follow a $10 million payout in 2014 by the university system to one of Wang’s former bosses, Dr. Robert Pedowitz, former chairman of UCLA’s orthopedic surgery department.

Before that whistleblower retaliation case was settled, Pedowitz testified that he had told university administrators that Wang and some of his fellow surgeons were putting patient care at risk by accepting so much corporate money. He alleged that UCLA looked the other way because it stood to benefit financially from the doctors’ activities.

UCLA denied Pedowitz’s allegations, and officials said they found no wrongdoing by faculty and no evidence that patient care was jeopardized. But the UC system paid him anyway, saying it wanted to avoid the “substantial expense and inconvenience” of further litigation."

California Colleges Required To Do More To Address Sex Harassment Allegations Under New Law

"This is an issue that we’ve become more and more aware of, and understanding that one in four college students today say they have had some form of sexual harassment while at school is very troubling,” Bonilla told KCBS.
Bonilla said too many women are still being subjected to inappropriate sexual conduct on campuses in California.
“The bill basically requires that schools put on the website all of their policies; that at new student orientation, they tell students about their policies very clearly,” Bonilla said.
She says the website must also include a timeline for when the student can expect a response from the college or university."

UC chancellors get raises -- some for second straight year

"University of California regents on Thursday gave raises to most of the system's campus chancellors -- and four, including UC Berkeley's leader, received their second pay bump since last July.

After back-to-back increases of 3 percent, the base pay for UC Berkeley Chancellor Nicholas Dirks grew to $531,939, up more than $30,000 from what it was in June 2015.

Other chancellors to receive a bump for the second consecutive year are UC San Francisco's Sam Hawgood (new base salary: $795,675), UCLA's Gene Block ($454,574) and UC San Diego's Pradeep Khosla ($449,204).

The raises were discussed in a Wednesday closed-session meeting and posted online before Thursday's meeting. The board approved the increases in open session without discussion."

UC Regents take steps to streamline board operations, dig more deeply into crucial issues

"Daniel Hare, the outgoing chair of the UC Academic Senate, told regents that a dramatic decrease in state support in the last few decades had nearly doubled the student-faculty ratio at his UC Riverside campus  to 29 to 1 from 14 to 1 in the 1980s. The larger classes have compelled many faculty members to switch to machine-scored multiple choice exams over essays and reduced opportunities to get to know students well enough to write meaningful letters of recommendation for them. “I can’t say UC today is able to offer the same quality of education”  as in the past, Hare said. Twelve moonlight with for-profit companies, including UCSF Medical Center’s chief executive, Mark Laret. He sits on the boards of two businesses that together have sold millions of dollars worth of products to his hospital and have paid him more than $5 million in cash and stock awards."

"Meanwhile, funding for public universities in California fell by 27 per cent between 2008 and 2012, and still hasn’t recovered to pre-crisis levels. One of the institutions that has been hit hardest is the University of California, Berkeley, whose chancellor, Nicholas Dirks, said in a memo to staff earlier this year that the institution faces “a substantial and growing structural deficit”, leading some to question whether it can remain a leading research institution.

But Hennessy denies that Stanford is rubbing its hands at its public neighbour’s travails. “Any small advantage that might be gained that way would be overwhelmed by [the] disadvantage of seeing an incredible school like Berkeley be diminished,” he says. “The system that’s been created in Silicon Valley is much bigger in terms of its needs for talent than Stanford could ever provide solely.”"

The broader issue -- beyond whether there was a clear policy and if Dirks knowingly violated it -- is how an elite campus such as UC Berkeley can attract top talent with diminished resources and lower pay than comparable private institutions such as Stanford and Harvard, said John Ellwood, a retired UC Berkeley public policy professor.

"The fundamental question," Ellwood said, "is how important is it to have these perks to attract people?"

"The allegations of improper travel involved a trip to India in January by Wicks and Dirks’ wife, Janaki Bakhle, an associate history professor at Berkeley. Dirks did not travel with Wicks and never has, a university source said.
The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because commenting on an ongoing investigation is not allowed, said the trip was paid for by the Berkeley Alumni Assn., not public university dollars. "...

"Questions surround UC Berkeley chancellor and personal trainer
Matier & Ross"

“I was thrilled the chancellor would want to spend time in my building and learn about recreational sports, and actually see how many students we serve,” Weinberger said.

He said recreational sports compete with organized athletics for funding, and because “they have all the political clout ... this seemed a very small favor to grant to have a key administrator in our building understanding our services.”

Dirks is dealing with plenty of issues at UC Berkeley. There’s the string of sexual harassment cases, which prompted a stern warning from Napolitano that the campus do better.

Last month, we reported that UC Berkeley has spent more than $1 million sprucing up University House, the chancellor’s official residence, including $700,000 for a security fence and $90,000 for new rugs.

The house’s former manager, Alice McNeil, complained that she had been pushed out of her job after doing chores for Dirks and Bakhle and resisting the couple’s attempts to avoid reporting the value of those hours to the Internal Revenue Service.

The assertions are being reviewed by Napolitano’s office, though it wasn’t immediately clear whether a formal investigation has been opened."

"Now UC officials have released information showing a major increase in admissions offers for the fall term to state residents, in particular to African-Americans and Latinos. In a statement, Napolitano linked the changes to increased funding by the Legislature.

This is not a particularly subtle attempt to once again deflect criticism over questionable decisions that UC officials made that directly hurt nearly 4,300 young Californians. The people of this state deserve contrition from top UC officials, not denial, spin and gamesmanship."

Why It’s Harder For Grad Students To Report Sexual Harassment

"Graduate students are “utterly dependent on advisers and usually a small circuit of experts in their area,” said Wendy Brown, a political scientist at the University of California, Berkeley. So “there’s a whole cascade of dangers that I think graduate students in particular consider when trying to take action here,” she added.

Brown was one of more than 1,000 academics who recently signed an open letter condemning Yale University ethicist Thomas Pogge, who was accused of sexual harassment. She said part of her motivation for signing it was frustration that too many harassers in academia are never punished while their victims may be forced to alter their whole careers."

What originally had been presented as a willing donation was later portrayed by Guzman as having been forced by UCOP.

In a formal complaint that Guzman’s office sent on May 26 to Charles Robinson, UCOP’s general counsel, she wrote, “Although UC policy permits chancellors and senior managers to serve on corporate boards, Chancellor Katehi is the only individual who was forced to donate money from her service on a corporate board to the university.”

The complaint continued, “No other chancellor or other senior executive has been forced to do so except Chancellor Katehi.”

"The new study, the first to measure California’s groundwater below 300 meters (the depth of a typical well), has inspired both skepticism and cautious support among the state’s scientists. “Any claim of a great increase in available freshwater for California is naïve and wildly misleading,” says Jay Famiglietti, a hydrologist at the University of California (UC), Irvine. But Thomas Harter, a hydrologist at UC Davis who was also not involved in the study, says it is “an important first step.”"

Just one section includes:
"In 2007, the newly elected Democratic majority presented the industry with a new threat.

A confidential planning document that surfaced in press accounts at the time shows Sallie Mae’s plan: Hire a public relations firm with ties to the Democrats. Meet with members of the Congressional Black and Hispanic caucuses to impress upon them how Sallie Mae was all about helping their low-income constituents. Set in motion grassroots efforts to turn back any action in Washington that might restrict Sallie Mae.

Later that year, Sen. Dick Durbin, an Illinois Democrat, introduced a bill to treat private student loans like any other debt in bankruptcy. It went nowhere, as have similar bills since.

The success was a testament to Sallie Mae’s evolution from a quasi-government agency into a full-fledged special interest in Washington whose primary goal is to protect and advance its own interests."
